Autograph letter from the Admiralty Hydrographer, map-maker and inventor of the Beaufort windscale to the sailor-scientist, Captain William Henry Smyth. Writing from the Admiralty on two sides of a small bifolium in September 1831, Beaufort addresses 'My dear Smyth', promising to 'adopt with pleasure your proposal about the [Greek] island Cerigo [Kythira] as soon as I get a proof - I was in hopes of saving a part of your labour'. Beaufort mentions 'Mr Cooling' and the fact that he knows of 'no book that gives a plan of it' continuing with a promise: 'Undoubtedly you shall have six copies of every chart plan or view that you execute for the office...', signing himself 'F Beaufort'. Smyth toured the Mediterranean aboard HMS Aid (renamed Adventure) to carry out the hydrographic survey of the Italian, Sicilian, Greek, and African coasts, constructing a large number of charts. After retiring from the navy Beaufort became its principal hydographer in which capacity he wrote this letter. Posterity has adjudged his primary achievement, however, to be the invention of the Beaufort Scale. The letter is accompanied by Alfred Friendly's biography of Beaufort - Smyth is mentioned several times in this work.
