[4] [64 full page engravings] The uncommon 1828 edition of Sarah Trimmer's sequence of instructive juvenile engravings from English history. The book is bound in full grain roan, flat backed with 'Trimmer's English History Prints' in gilt on the spine. The tan coloured leather is partly worn away towards the lower corner of the rear board. Internally the 64 engravings are preceded by a half title and title page. An early rather grand gift inscription appears on the front free endpaper: 'Charles, Henry, William Gordon a present from his Grandmama Gordon May 20th 1832.' with a later Gordon ownership signature above: E W Gordon. Writing in pretty juvenile copperplate hand an early owner, no doubt a Gordon, has noted below each engraving the identity of the scene depicted, using the two volume description which was issued separately at the same time. Thus we are presented with the 'Druids gathering Mistletoe', continuing through the 'Battle of Hastings', the 'Defeat of the Spanish Armada' and a graphically represented Fire of London' concluding with the 'Execution of the Rebel Lords' after the uprising of 1745. The engravings, many dating from 1792 are 3 inches square and naively executed but full of character and incident.
