Angela Carter's lightly annotated copy of Rosemund Tuve's classic study of Elizabethan and metaphysical imagery. The first Phoenix edition from 1961 bound in card wrappers, a little rubbed. Carter's ownership signature appears on the half title written in black ink with her posthumous bookplate on the verso of the front cover opposite. Likely acquired while Carter was at Bristol University where she read English Literature, Carter appears to have read the whole book which falls open, aptly, at 'The Criterion of Decorum'. Carter has annotated the text with marginal lines at pp 48 'artistic statement of truth', p130 'the dissonant image, p134 allegory; p145 'sensuous vividness'; p161 'network of allegories'; p185 irony; p193 'enjoyment of the propriety of images'. On reflection the fit between Tuve and Carter seems peculiarly satisfying.
