pp 68 Fascinating linen covered photo album recording the travels of the heir to Capenoch House in Dumfriesshire, John Gladstone in 1926. Mounted three photographs to a page (about 200 images in total) and extensively annotated throughout, the vintage photos are accompanied by ephemera such as tickets laid in, printed itineraries etc. The album begins in the garden and estate with named family members at Capenoch House in April 1926 before Gladstone ventured abroad to Grenoble in May 1926 where he met Pierre Besseige (Ecole Normale business card laid in) and began a series of excursions and climbs in the company of friends to 'le col de Vence', 'le col de L'arc' and the first serious climb with ropes up 'Le Mont Aiguille (6990 ft)'. There is a tour through the snow-covered mountains of Les Grands Goulet and a climb up Le Col de L'Au. Scrupulously annotated throughout Gladstone visited Avignon, Orange, the glacier de Fuydane with careful recording of friends' names, dates and locations. The album concludes with an excursion of the Dumfries and Galloway Natural Hist. and Antiquarian Society to Aloway and Logan and a trip to St Kilda.
