[8] pp 500 [6] adverts. Fifth edition of Behn's works, including Oronooko. The book is bound in contemporary panelled calf with red speckled edges, rebacked most attractively with raised bands and a tan morocco spine label. New paste-down and end-paper followed by original blank leaf and title page; the printed text collates complete as per ESTC description with continuous register and usual errors in pagination, thus page 376 numbered 377 and page 378 omitted; pages 402-460 numbered 442-500 (see Harvard copy) with three terminal advertisement leaves. Marginal paper repair to page 87 at tail of page, just touching the last letter of the final four lines of printed text; similar paper repair to page 131, touching final letters of half a dozen lines close to the tail of the leaf recto and verso (K2). A few other leaves with corners repaired, not touching text. Like all Behn's works, very uncommon in trade and at auction where one copy only appears in the records from 1963. Aphra Benn was the first English woman to earn her living by her pen as dramatist and novelist, breaking a series of cultural barriers and becoming a role model for future generations of writers. As Virginia Woolf puts it, Behn was 'forced to make a living on her wits' and in recent decades the product of that wit has found a more enthusiastic audience than at any time since the Restoration period when Behn achieved her early success.
