An autograph letter written by the twelfth child and fifth daughter of George III and his wife, Charlotte of Mecklenburg Strelitz. The letter which is dated June 8th 1831 is written from the Ranger's House, Blackheath in London to Lady Howe, wife of the Royal eye surgeon, Jonathan Wathen Waller whose skills were much used in demand during the latter years of George III's reign when among other health ailments he gradually lost his sight. The letter is double sided with an embossed fleur de lys device; the paper has been trimmed slightly before mounting on an album page that allows viewing from both sides. Sophia thanks her correspondent for their 'obliging Letter' but regrets that due to 'many Engagements yesterday in London It has not been in my power to send an earlier Expressions of my sense of your attention in recollecting me upon this occasion of likewise of my Regret that I should feel unequal to avail myself of your kind invitation for the the 14th instant to have the Honor of meeting their Majesties at [Lady Howe's home] Popes Villa'. Sophia Charlotte Howe was Waller's second wife, Baroness of Langar. Princess Sophia Matilda was appointed Ranger of Greenwich Park and moved into the Ranger's House after it was bought by the Crown in 1813. She is remembered as 'a kind and liberal benefactor to the poor of the town' of Greenwich. The letter comes from a collection of autographs and letters put together by the Lane family of Kings Bromley Hall near Lichfield in the nineteenth century, several of them to or relating to Wathen Phipps.
