ff73 (& blanks) Wesleyan Training College friendship album from 1859-1860 of poems, watercolours, broadsides, drawings and miniature written by trainee teachers attending the Methodist teacher training college in Westminster, 1859-1860. Compiled by Mary Elizabeth Stevens whose ownership signature appears opposite the first entry, around two thirds of the hundred or so contributors record their involvement with the Methodist College which was founded in 1851 on Horseferry Road in London (now the site of Channel 4's headquarters) to provide more trained teachers. Bound in contemporary red textured cloth over boards with 'Album' in gilt on the upper board, spine professionally repaired and an amateur red tape repair to inner hinges; the paper stock is of alternate blue, pink and yellow embossed sheets with 'Mary Eliz.th Stevens April 19th 1860' opposite the first entry which is a poem by 'M E Stevens'. The College's curriculum and purpose shines through in contributions such as that of Annie Elizabeth Turley who has sketched Methodist 'Mission Premises' ( a series of neat huts in a rural landscape) at Lakemba in 'Feejee' - Fiji - under the slogan 'Let God be known among the Heathen' with a Farewell address made as 'I go to those distant Isles'. Less dramatically there are fine calligraphic renderings of Biblical sentiments such as 'Favour is Deceitful and Beauty is Vain but a Woman that Feareth the Lords she shall be Praised', a poem on transportation - 'The Penitent Convict and his Family Bible', a long poem on hell by 'Thomas Wild, Wesleyan College' and even an illustrated excerpt from Shakespeare's Tempest and Hannah Shearston's 'The Teacher's Office'. Printed broadsides include 'The Student's Farewell' and 'To Misses Scott, Wildish, and Bachelor, on their departure for Mysore... 1860' and there are two pieces of pressed seaweed.
