[ff] [8] ff [1-6] 7 [8-11] 12-15 [16-20] 21-136 [137-138] [Lacking the preliminaries, 15 early leaves of text and final two leaves; f93 torn with loss] Worn and incomplete copy of Queen Elizabeth's Prayer Book, a beautifully produced sixteenth century work, 'luxuriantly decorated' with Richard Day's woodcuts. The lower board is present, sixteenth century sheep; the upper cover is long since absent along with the preliminaries and a dozen leaves of text. What remains is browned and often dogeared but still a magnificent example of the printer's art. Early ownership signature of 'Willia[m] Brodnham' (f36) and Phillip Bayley (f69). It's not possible to be certain which edition of the 1580s or 1590s this book comes. With its elaborately sequenced woodcut decorations supposedly inspired by Durer and Holbein, the book has been described as 'effectively a Protestant Book of Hours... its beautiful decoration including woodcuts is unrivalled by any other prayer book of the age.' Richard Day inherited his father's monopolies on printing metrical psalms, certain sermons and prayers and this imprint no doubt drew much of its popularity from its Royal connection and the superb page layout. Even mutilated thus, lovely.
