pp 99 A jacketed first of Cripps' final volume of verse with a manuscript draft of his poem in praise of his friend, Frank Weston, Bishop of Zanzibar. The book is near fine in a very good jacket which has old paper reinforcement inside it. It is accompanied by an inscribed slip of paper: 'To Miss Gertrude Franklin - with true gratitude for true friendship - Arthur S Cripps.' On a separate piece of folded paper is Cripps' draft of his poem 'In Memory of Frank, Bishop of Zanzibar' with an important alteration in the final line from 'A Black Christ bow'd beneath a happy Load' in which he changes 'happy' to 'Heart-Break', thus radically altering the tone of his 1924 poem. Cripps is a revered figure who spent fifty years as an Anglican priest and missionary in Mashonaland, now southern Zimbabwe where he took the side of the African population against the distribution of land decreed by the British South Africa Company.
