Inscribed gift from the poet Ruth Fainlight (friend to both Sylvia Plath and Assia Wevill) ‘for Ted [Hughes] and Assia, Ruth’. Ruth Fainlight was married to Hughes' friend and ally Alan Sillitoe and herself became close to both Sylvia Plath and her successor in the Hughes household, Assia Wevill. Fainlight's gift inscription is on the verso of the title page; there is one annotation to the text in black ink – apparently made with the same pen used for the inscription. Fainlight has underlined the words ‘seal his eyes’ in her poem ‘Sleep-learning’ which explores the dreams of abandonment that guiltily connect her with her sleeping son. Fainlight’s gift inscription was made to Hughes and Assia Wevill during a torrid year for the couple as they lived together at Court Green in Devon, sharing the house with Hughes’ father who refused to talk to Wevill. Also present in this hothouse were Hughes’ two children with Plath. Ruth Fainlight who was at first a friend of Sylvia Plath has written of that prior relationship that ‘we were two poets, Sylvia Plath and Ruth Fainlight, not Mrs. Hughes and Mrs. Sillitoe, and our friendship was centred on this crucial reality’ before getting to know Assia Wevill after Plath’s death, taking her in during the Christmas of 1968 when she had separated from Hughes and just before her own untimely death, also by suicide. Provenance: Frieda Hughes' sale of 'my personal family items' at Bonhams, London (21 March, 2018) which she described in the catalogue as 'redolent of my parents' joint history... the books and the pamphlets and the poems signed by my mother and father, represented important aspects of their literary lives and were evidence of their powerful partnership.'
