Schoolboy Shakespearian photograph of Lawrence Olivier playing Maria in Twelfth Night in 1918 - from the actor's own collection. Oliver has annotated the verso of the card mount in pencil, at first mistaking himself for another of his schoolboy outings as Kate in the Taming of the Shrew but crossed this attribution through and writing instead: '12th Night First Appearance School show Old Theatre Stratford?' Olivier's schoolboy performances at All Saints' Choir School in London have entered theatre legend as several were attended by Ellen Terry who pronounced in her diary that the boy who played Brutus (Olivier) was 'already a great actor'. This photograph which bears the blindstamp of the photographer 'Alex Corbett, 21 Baker St, London' shows a grimacing Olivier stage right in role as the sharp-tongued Maria with a the cross-legged clown Feste downstage while other boys take on the roles of Toby Belch, Aguecheek etc. This vintage photograph is mounted on card which has slight dust marking but the image is sharp and fine. From youthful success Olivier went on to become the preeminent actor of his generation, defining the great Shakespearean roles of Hamlet and Henry V for mid-century Britain. This is one of several photographs currently offered by Modernfirsteditions to have come from Lord Olivier's personal collection.
