MODERNFIRSTEDITIONS

Dear Friend,

There's a whiff of Scottish nostalgia around the Visitors' book for Nice's 'Thistle Club' which catered to jet-set ex-pat visitors to the French Riviera in the 1960s. Marie Stopes's private art collection carries very different memories of her Scottish forebears, notably her mother the women's rights campaigner Charlotte Carmichael.

There's nothing Scottish about the Australian anti-hero Ned Kelly but we are delighted to offer 99 original drawings of the cast and film-making of Tony Richardson's 1969 Ned Kelly movie which starred Mick Jagger.

Apart from a little trove of David Jones's writings and illustrated books there are works owned and annotated by the playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan, the atomic pioneer John Dalton and Mr Bouncing Bomb - Barnes Wallis. This last, which was acquired by the brains behind the Dambusters raid on the day he was elected to the Royal Society, still has its purchase receipt (doubling as a bookmark) from 'John & Edward Bumpus Ltd, 477 Oxford Street'.

Best wishes,

Christian White
