MODERNFIRSTEDITIONS

Dear Friend,

We're delighted to offer a major collection of letters by the naturalist and Great War veteran Henry Williamson. This remarkable correspondence charts the genesis of the writer's 15 novel semi-autobiographical sequence, A Chronicle of Ancient Sunlight, in which he attempted to give definitive shape to his shattering wartime experience. As he puts it to Sir John Heygate: 'are the tears shed by so many, so many sighs drained at Ypres, come back as pearls?' These are intimate documents written to his closest friend by a significant twentieth century writer: 20 letters a year over 25 years.

From the late seventeenth century we've a single play extracted from Shakespeare's Fourth Folio and a stunning little Bible from 1658 bound in sealskin, and with silver furniture, intended to be given as a wedding gift under Cromwell's Commonwealth. Closer to our time is a fascinating series of drafts of Benjamin Britten's last opera - not forgetting Sven Berlin's idiosyncratic tribute to John Lennon.

Among the association copies is the surrealist René Magritte's copy of John Le Carre's L'Espion Qui Venait du Froid (no translation needed?) and a Tauchnitz imprint owned by James Joyce's brother, Stanislaus.

And, to sum up the best and worst of the nineteenth century, three broadsides that mark a double execution in Hereford (1885) advertise a musical about slavery (1832) and invite visitors to tour Brunel's Thames Tunnel then under construction (1836).

Stay well,

Christian White
