MODERNFIRSTEDITIONS

Dear Friend,

Nineteenth century women's medicine, education and the fight for the vote feature strongly this month. From New York comes an 1860s manuscript of 'Clinical Cases' at Bellevue Hospital, written by a young doctor who seems to have specialised in women's medicine and performed a mastectomy under ether. Ten years before that 'Maggie C Bush' was part of the first intake to one of the earliest colleges anywhere in the world founded to award degrees to women - Elmira College. In feisty style Maggie rails against learning Latin and the classics - 'it is said they have accomplished nothing in this country' - but is knocked sideways by a lecture from Henry Beecher Ward.

From the other side of the Atlantic we're delighted to offer a London fin de siecle magazine which was produced at Number 40 Sloane Square in tiny numbers by the cyclostyle process. This was the Journal of the Upper Chelsea Institute complete with reports on lectures by Millicent Fawcett, William Morris and articles by the club's librarian, the future bibliographer, Alfred W Pollard.

Here are two books from the library of George Band, the youngest member of the successful 1953 expedition to conquer Everest. Both volumes are personalised in his characteristic style via annotated post-it notes sticking out slightly from the books' foreedge.

And so to two very different presentation copies. Sure to raise hackles is W B Yeats' Pages from a Diary (1944) which was presented by his widow to the wife of 'Hitler's man' in Dublin, Eduard Hempel, the Nazi minister in Ireland through the war years. And from another torrid time, a 1665 Izaak Walton presentation copy, with manuscript corrections, which went to his friend the anatomist Thomas Wharton. At the time of the book's publication Wharton was one of very few physicians remaining in London during the last major outbreak of plague. Don't worry, no sign of buboes since I've owned the book...

Best as ever,

Christian White
