MODERNFIRSTEDITIONS

Dear Colleague,

A short list of ABA Rare Book Fair London items below. I'd draw your attention to several pieces from Frieda Hughes' collection of her parents' books and manuscripts including a fine first of Sylvia Plath's masterpiece, Ariel, inscribed by Hughes and accompanied by a letter advising the recipient to 'Keep the Ariel in seal - I mean in an airtight bag, if possible. That's if you want to keep its value'.

Plath's Letters Home is present in an early version of the Galley Proof, annotated by Frieda Hughes, and there's an unpublished manuscript sonnet to Keats in Ted Hughes' hand as well as a heavily revised article by Ted Hughes about the inspiration for Plath's late poems.

More marital strife I'm afraid in an inscribed Rex Whistler volume given by Graham Greene to his estranged wife Vivien Greene a few short months after they separated in 1948 and a collection of annotated conductors' scores from the late maestro Sir Colin Davis is one of several musical items. Written by the Tudor romance writer and spy John Dickenson is a 1614 manuscript account of his recent journey escorting Princess Elizabeth (the 'Winter Queen') from Arnhem to Heidelberg.

Particularly striking is a World War II photo album compiled by a serviceman aboard HMS Indomitable in 1944-'45 which includes vintage photos of kamikaze attacks and the Japanese surrender of Hong Kong.

Do drop by Stand G07, Battersea Evolution, 24-26 May.

Best wishes,

Christian White
