Memoir of a Survivor
[6] pp 7-190 [2] Adverts Doris Lessing's Memoirs of a Survivor with a memorable gift inscription from Julie Christie who played the lead role in the 1981 film adaptation. Christie has written diagonally across the inside of the front cover: 'Excuse the state of the book; it's been around a long time! Making this film was my introduction to Doris Lessing who soon became one of my favourite authors. Hope you feel the same about her, Julie Christie'. Having achieved global recognition for her sixties film in Dr Zhivago and the Far From the Madding Crowd, Christie turned her back on film-making for much of the next two decades but it is easy to see how Doris Lessing's novel must have appealed to her. This is the 19th impression of the Picador Pan edition with an image from the film on the front cover which shows Julie Christie sweeping aside a net curtain. The card wrappers show a few light marks and there is spotting to the book's edges with some staining along the top edge of the last few pages. The book is square and the binding and text complete. Altogether a remarkable association copy.
