A handsomely bound set of Buckingham\'s America inscribed by the author to his sister on first publication in 1841. The inscription from Buckingham is on the blank endpaper of Volume I and reads: \'Mrs Mary Polyblank of Truro from her affectionate Brother J S Buckingham, May 8th 1841\'. The Buckingham family came from Cornwall and the author would write about his Cornish roots in his unfinished autobiography. The books are in half tan calf bindings over marbled boards with new and very good looking re-backed spines. There are old damp stain marks to the margins scattered through the three volumes. Buckingham had a varied and remarkable career as traveller, adventurer and latterly journalist and author and these three volumes are a rich source of information about contemporary America.
